Writer calls for more support

Ce que le jour doit à la nuit film Algiers - Hocine Bousaleh What the Day Owes the Night had its world premier on Monday in Algiers, Algeria. Costing 14 million Euros, the film adaptation of Yasmina Khadra’s award-winning novel is the second most expensive foreign movie made in Algeria, after Shay Fl Saharaa. Khadra, whose real name is Mohammed Moulessehoul, praised the film’s French director Alexandre Arcady and script writer Daniel Saint-Hamont, but called for more support for the Algerian film industry in a press conference after the premiere. Khadra ‘s novel, which won France TVs Book Award in 2008, the Best Book Award in 2008 and in 2009 and the Corsica Readers’ Award, deals with the themes of unrequited love, family and war in Algeria. Arcady said the movie and book, translated into 42 languages, reflects the intimate lives of the people of Algeria. “I hope that the movie will be seen all over Algeria and France because it highlights our cooperative history together,” he added. What the Day Owes the Night will premiere in Algeria and France December 12.
