Iconic Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum Moroccan photographer Mohamed Maradza has revealed he possess a handkerchief that belonged to the late iconic Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum. The photographer promised to offer it as public property, in addition to a collection of rare photographs taken of the starlet in the late sixties in Morocco.
One picture depicts the moment a fan attempted to kiss the feet of Umm Kulthum, prompting her to fall to the ground in reaction. At the time many believed it to be an assassination attempt.
The invaluable handkerchief was given to Maradza by Umm kulthum in recognition of his talent in photography. He was one of the first Arab photographers. Maradza has kept the token for more than 50 years, rejecting any offers to sell it.
Maradza has photographed King Mohammed V and King Hassan II of Morocco. He has also kept many rare images of famous artists and Arab leaders, including intimate portrayals of influential Egyptian singer and actress Abdel Halim Hafez and Soad Hosny.
Being many celebrities favourite photographer meant Maradza knew many secrets about his subjects during their stay in Morocco at the time of King Hassan II reign. But the photographer is keeping professional and refuses to divulge any details.
