Nouakchott - Mohammad Abeidy Sharif

Mauritanian women’s groups El-Monasara is urging the government to take action Female protesters in Mauritania have said they will resume their struggle for greater involvement in the country’s political system, it has emerged today. Women rights groups within the country want the government to increase the number of female MP in parliament to 33 percent -13 percent higher than the current figure of 20 percent.
During a meeting held in the capital Nouakchott today, women’s rights campaigners called for the government to “bear responsibility for how women are represented in government.”
Various groups pointed out that unless “the regime actively seeks to involve women than the current share of female MPs which stands 20 percent will see a dramatic decline.”
A spokesperson for the Mauritanian women’s groups, El-Monasara, confirmed that the group has sent a message to the country’s President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, advising him to take the “necessary measures to ensure upcoming elections involve the participation of women.”
