San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland, Calif., are the most physically active in the country, said Russell Brands, a supplier of apparel and team uniforms. Dri-Power 360 Healthiest Habitats study, conducted by Sperling\'s BestPlaces for Russell Brands, found Northern California scored best for healthy eating, body mass index and regular exercise. However, the area only has an average number of gyms and fitness centers, meaning physically fit West Coasters get a significant amount of their exercise while also enjoying the California outdoors, Gary Barfield, executive vice president of Russell, said in a statement. After San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, the areas with the healthiest habitats were: Seattle and Tacoma, Wash. Portland, Vancouver, Beaverton, in Oregon and Washington. San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos, Calif. Boston-Cambridge, Mass. Los Angeles-Orange County, Calif. Honolulu. Washington, D.C., Arlington, Alexandria, Va. Denver-Aurora, Colo. Minneapolis- St. Paul, Minn. Sacramento, Arden, Arcade, Roseville, Calif. New York and Newark, N.J. Salt Lake City. Hartford, West Hartford, East Hartford, Conn. Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Fla. To determine which U.S. metropolises had the healthiest habits, the researchers evaluated, on a per capita basis, the number of gyms and athletic clubs; the number of hiking and running trails; retail fitness establishments; the percentage of workers commuting by walking or bicycling; bicycling infrastructure by miles of bikeways, other initiatives; the percent of population getting daily exercise; body mass index of the population; and the number of servings of fruits, vegetables eaten by the population.
