
South Korea's food watchdog said Sunday it will allow local foodmakers to use saccharin, which had been banned for safety concerns, in bread and ice cream products, as latest studies show that the artificial sweetener does not cause cancer.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said its latest pre-announcement of legislation will cover allowing foodmakers to use saccharin in producing chocolates, candies and other snacks as well. Previously, the sweetener was only allowed in the production of few goods such as kimchi, cereals or jam.
