NYC requires some businesses to provide 5 paid sick days

The New York City Council voted 47-4 to override a veto of the mayor to require city businesses with at least 20 employees to offer five paid sick days a year. The city ordinance was vetoed earlier by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who had said the requirement could hurt small businesses, the New York Daily News reported. The City Council voted to require businesses to provide the paid sick days starting in a year. In 2015, businesses with at least 15 employees would be required to provide the five sick days. The measure also prohibits all businesses from firing workers who miss work for illness, the News said. After the council approved the paid sick days earlier in the year, the mayor said he hadn\'t ruled out attempting to block implementing the law via a lawsuit.
