Russian government approves fines for failure to label GMO food

A Russian government commission on Tuesday approved the proposal to impose large fines for the failure to report genetically modified material in food ahead of the cabinet's review of the issue.
The document introduces 20,000 to 50,000-ruble ($550-1,400) fines for private entrepreneurs for misleading customers on GM content, and 100,000 to 150,000-ruble ($2,760-4,150) fines for legal entities.
"The new legislation aims to protect Russian consumers' rights and heath," the government said on its website.
