A total of 236 suspects in China were caught for illegal football gambling during the ongoing UEFA Euro 2016, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Sunday.
More than 28 million yuan (4.2 million U.S. dollars) was confiscated or frozen in cases involving overseas gambling websites, according to the MPS.
Police authorities have intensified investigations into suspected web gambling since April.
Since June 14, police have busted several rings that organized gambling activities in cities including Shenyang in Liaoning Province and Shenzhen in Guangdong Province.
According to the MPS, cracking down on cross-border web gambling has become a regular task for the police as international gambling companies have used overseas gambling websites to develop Chinese agents and attract gamblers in recent years.
