The Community Police Section at the Khalifa Police Station in the Abu Dhabi Police Peripheral Regions Directorate has participated in a campaign at Yas Mall under the theme "Don’t Use Your Mobile Phone While Driving". This campaign is implemented by Umm Al Arab Elementary School in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with the Traffic and Patrols Branch at the station.
As a part of the campaign, a number of school students distributed awareness brochures to the public. The brochures include advice to motorists, calling upon them to refrain from this objectionable behaviour that can lead to unwanted consequences and serious traffic accidents; because using the mobile phone while driving is a dangerous distraction that draws drivers' attention away from the road.
Captain Salem Suhail Al Ameri, Head of the Community Police Section at the Khalifa Police Station, stressed the Community Police’s keenness to communicate with both its partners and the civil community to implement events and activities that could enhance awareness about social and police matters.
He said, "Using a mobile phone while driving is highly distracting and extremely dangerous. Traffic crashes, involving both injuries and fatalities, are increasingly being caused in part by drivers using their cell phones to read or write a text message. Talking on a mobile phone while driving may cause lapses of attention, concentration and judgment. It causes drivers to take their eyes off the road or their hands off the steering wheel often, to see who is calling and pressing a button to answer the call."
