Abdelilah Benkirane
Rabat - Arab Today

Following King Mohammed VI’s decision to relieve Abdelilah Benkirane from his duties as appointed Head of Government, Abdelilah Benkirane has urged the Justice and Development Party’s (PJD) members to refrain from commenting on King’s decision.

In a communiqué issued just a few minutes on the official website of the PJD, Benkirane called upon his partisan colleagues to avoid making any comments or statement to King Mohammed VI’s decision to appoint another member from the PJD to lead the negotiation to form a new coalition government.

King Mohamemd VI has relieved Benkirane from his position as head of government, according to a communique issued by the Royal Cabinet on Wednesday evening.

The King has decided to appoint another personality form the Party of the PJD to form a new coalition government, the same source added.

The Moroccan monarch received Benkirane earlier on Wednesday to inform him of his decision to appoint another leading member of the PJD to head the government, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

King Mohammed made the decision to dismiss Benkirane 48 hours after his return from an African tour, which lasted from more than five weeks.

Two days after the legislative elections held on October 7, 2016, King Mohammed received Abdelilah Benkirane and appointed and entrusted him with forming a new coalition government.

But after over five months of negotiations with different political parties, he was unable to break the deadlock and form a government.
“After his return to Morocco following his visit to African countries, King Mohammed VI was informed that the negotiations that Abdelilah Benkirane had conducted for more than five months, have not been successful to date for achieving the government coalition,” according to the same source.

“It may be recalled that HM King Mohammed VI had, on several occasions, exhorted the appointed Head of Government to speed up the formation of the new government,”  the source concluded.
