A Canadian from Toronto who was in a coalition battling the Islamic State group in northeast Syria was killed by a suicide bomber Wednesday, fellow fighters and a monitor said.
"A Canadian fighter was martyred by a terrorist suicide bomber who detonated an explosives belt during fighting in Hasakeh" province, said Talal Ali Sello, spokesman for the US-backed Arab-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces coalition.
Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed to AFP that a Canadian was killed in fighting near Al-Hol.
Late Friday, the SDF said it had launched its first operation against territory controlled by IS in the northeast.
The coalition's targets included the towns of Shadadi and Al-Hol.
In October, the powerful Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and Arab rebel groups that have long fought alongside each other formalised their alliance in the SDF which includes Kurds, Arabs and Syriac Christians.
