South Sinai governor Khaled Foda has revealed Egypt’s Defence Ministry has been providing security forces with heavy arms to tackle the region’s arms smugglers, kidnappers and outlaws. Egyptian Defence Minister Abdel-Fatah el-Sisi is behind the armament drive, he added. Security forces could soon be given more weapons and armoured vehicles to tackle lawlessness in Sinai’s cities and remoter areas. Deputy director of security in South Sinai, Mahmoud el-Hefnawy recently called for tighter security measures after armed men attacked authorities in Wadi Feran.
