Egypt destroys 6 tunnels along Gaza border

Egyptian army forces on Monday destroyed six smuggling tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border, security officials said. The tunnels were located north of Rafah in the neighborhood of al-Sarsoriya and specialized in smuggling goods and people. Egyptian forces used explosives to destroy the tunnels. All goods being transferred to Gaza were seized by the military. On Monday, Egyptian forces launched a third consecutive day of strikes targeting militants in Sinai. Ground forces moved into Rafah protected by helicopters as Egypt\'s army continues its campaign against militants, the largest mobilization of force in the area since the 1973 war with Israel. Security forces cut all communications services in the area. An Egyptian official said Sunday that more than 90 percent of the smuggling tunnels have now been destroyed. Egypt\'s army, which ousted the Muslim Brotherhood\'s Morsi in a July coup, has since destroyed many of the tunnels Brotherhood ally Hamas uses to bring crucial supplies into the blockaded Strip. The tunnels have been a lifeline for the flow of food, clothing, building materials and fuel into the impoverished territory, which Israel has blockaded since 2006. Source: Maan
