The Libyan General National Congress has agreed to appoint Mohamed El Sheikh as the Minister of Interior in the interim Libyan government headed by Ali Zaidan. The appointment was announced on Saturday after the resignation of the former Interior Minister Ashour Shoael. Before he resigned Shoael recommended Sheikh for the position. Sheikh received an overwhelming majority of votes, gaining 99 out of a possible 123. Political analysts in Libya have said that the main reason behind Shoael’s resignation was his inability to build a strong police force to challenge armed groups in the country. Shoal’s time as Minister featured multiple kidnappings and bombings, resulting in a loss of public confidence in his abilities. El Sheikh was recently accused by activists of working with the former regime government.
