Arab League Secretary-General Dr. Nabil Elaraby has warned against the continuing bloodshed in Syria and the failure to reach a solution to the worsening Syrian crisis, which he described as the biggest disaster on the human level in the 21st century. In remarks to reporters today, Dr. Elaraby criticized the failure of the Security Council for two years to find a way out of the Syrian crisis, attributing that failure to the conflict of interests between Russia and the United States. He stressed the importance of the joint Arab-European meeting which will be held on the foreign ministers level in Athens next June to discuss the situation in Syrian and Palestine, in addition to the issues of cooperation between the two sides. Arrangements for the meeting were discussed today during a meeting Elaraby held with EU ambassadors accredited to Cairo . He expressed the hope that the next stage would see progress regarding the Syrian crisis , especially after the failure of the Geneva II Conference. Dr. Elaraby called on the Syrian opposition to broaden the base of participation to include other spectra and to overcome the differences between them to become a real representative of Syria to achieve the aspirations of the people for change. On the controversy over inviting representatives of the Syrian opposition to participate in the meetings of the Arab League Council in September according to the recent Kuwait summit's resolutions, Dr. Elaraby stressed that the Arabs should not reduce the Syrian crisis and its complexity to the occupation of a seat because filling it by the opposition does not mean the overthrow of the regime, adding that such participation would be an exceptional case for the rules in force in the Arab League.
