Iraqi forces, backed by popular mobilization forces and the US-led coalition aircraft, have launched a military operation to liberate Daesh-held areas in Ramadi city of Anbar province, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The Iraqi troops managed to purge the Olympic Stadium area in Ramadi city from Daesh fighters and secure the international road, the statement added.
The operation resulted in killing a number of Daesh militants and defusing explosive devices planted by Daesh fighters to block the advance of the Iraqi forces, according to the statement.
The Iraqi armed forces were tasked with protecting the liberated areas in the vicinity of the city of Ramadi, while the Iraqi security forces are advancing towards Al Tamim neighborhood in western Ramadi city to free it from Daesh insurgents, an Iraqi military source said.
