Israeli press sources have revealed an Israeli plan to establish a Jewish settlement near the Abu Dis village, east of Jerusalem. The weekly “Iroshalim” publication reported that Nir Barkat, Jerusalem's mayor, seeks to establish a Jewish settlement to be extended over an area of several acres near Abu Dis comprising 250 housing units. The newspaper added that Barkat met with a number of the municipal council's members in an effort to enlist their support and approval on the settlement scheme, to be implemented at the earliest. Barkat is reportedly carrying out tours in Palestinian areas in the city promising them to improve their harsh living conditions, Critics say the promises are never followed through with the situation worsening in terms of "Judaisation", the demolition of houses, displacements and duplication of Arnona taxes.
