
Jordan’s King Abdullah II met in Washington last night with US Secretary of State John Kerry and discussed with him the latest developments in the Middle East, especially those related to peace efforts, and developments in the Syrian crisis. According to Jordan news agency (Petra), King Abdullah emphasized during the meeting on the importance of intensifying efforts to resume peace negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis that address all final status issues and lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, on the lines of the fourth of June 1967, pointing out in this context to the importance of the United States to continue its sponsorship of the peace process and to play its role in this area. He also stressed that Jordan will continue its efforts with the various parties involved in the peace process in order to achieve its objectives in finding a just, lasting and comprehensive peace for the Palestinian cause which constitute the core of the conflict in the region. Regarding the situation in Syria, the King of Jordan re-emphasized the need for a comprehensive political solution to the crisis to end the suffering of the Syrian people and preserve the unity of Syria’s land and people, warning at the same time of the repercussions of the continuing crisis on the region, especially Jordan due to the increasing burdens as a result of the continued flow of Syrian refugees into its territory.
