The number of divorces went up while less couples tied the knot in 2015 in Singapore, according to the annual "Statistics on Marriages and Divorces" report released by the Singapore Department of Statistics (Singstat) on Wednesday.

According to the report, a total of 28,322 marriages were registered in 2015, slightly less than the 28,407 marriages registered in 2014. However, the number of divorces and annulments was 7,522 in 2015, up 2.9 percent in 2014.

More people are getting married at an older age, with the median age for marrying rising from 29.8 years old in 2005 to 30.3 years old for men in 2015, and from 26.9 years old to 28.2 years old for female.

The report also saw an increase of divorces among older couples over the last decade, with the proportion of divorcees for men aged 45 years and above went up to 42.4 percent in 2015 from 30 percent ten years ago. Things are similar among women, with the proportion rose by over 7 percent to 27.5 percent.

The median age at divorce was 42.9 for men and 38.8 for women, also older than the 39.1 years old and 35.4 years old, respectively, in 2005.

Even for those who got married, more end up in divorces sooner than before. Figure shows that

the median marriage duration for divorces in 2015 was at 10 years, which is slightly shorter than the 10.4 years in 2014.
