Once an occupant of palaces, Mohamed Morsi is now serving a provisional detention in Borg el-Arab Prison in Alexandria. The deposed president of Egypt is receiving proper treatment in accordance with law. He is being examined by doctors in line with Article 46 of prison law, Assistant Interior Minister for Prison Affairs Mohamed Rateb told MENA Wednesday. Inmates should undergo medical examination during the first ten days of their imprisonment, Rateb noted. This period can be longer or shorter depending on the health condition of prisoners, he said. Morsi is currently under protective custody until he is fully examined, Rateb made it clear. Security measures have been tightened in the room where he is currently staying, he added. Asked whether Morsi is wearing the provisional detention uniform, Rateb said Morsi has the right to choose his outfit so long as the prison administration does not decide otherwise. But he is currently wearing the white uniform, he noted. Like all inmates, Morsi is entitled to an exceptional visit on the occasion of the new Hijri year as directed by Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, Rateb said. But he should finish his medical examination period before visitors go to see him, he made it clear. Morsi has had no visitors since his plane landed in Borg el-Arab prison on November 4, Rateb said. Rateb stressed that all prisoners are well treated, refuting claims by Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed el-Beltagi that he was attacked in prison. This is baseless, Rateb insisted. Also serving provisional terms in Borg el-Arab are Sobhi Saleh and Hassan el-Brens, but they have not met at all with Morsi, the assistant interior minister said, noting that this is not allowed.
