The parliament of Myanmar has approved the government's bid for becoming a party to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities and the Convention on Nuclear Safety, official media reported Friday.
A military MP called on the government to encourage the peaceful use of nuclear energy as well as to enact the Nuclear Safety Law in the country sooner.
Supporting the country's efforts to join the conventions, another MP emphasized the need to prevent trafficking of nuclear materials and nuclear facility accidents.
Nuclear energy, along with safety measures, should be considered in the country's drive to achieve social and economic goals of sustainable development, more MPs said, stressing the need of adequate electricity supply to attract more foreign investment.
Highlighting the importance of the wide use of nuclear technology and nuclear safety, it was also said that nuclear energy can be used to reduce greenhouse gas emission and negative effects of climate change.
