Sudanese official conveys hope for Darfur

A leading figure in the Sudanese government has said that the tumultuous region in Darfur has experienced more “development and stability” since the overthrow of the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Gaddafi was killed in October 2011, following the overthrow of his 42-year regime in the Arab Spring revolutions. Speaking in an interview with the Russian media, head of Darfur’s regional authority, Dr Tigany Sissy accused the former Libyan leader of arming rebel groups in the region for decades, who were then able to cause “utter chaos and devastation.” He added that the security situation in Darfur has witnessed “notable progress” since overthrowing the former Libyan regime. Sissy is set to visit the Qatari capital of Doha on April 7 to attend the Donors’ Conference, a meeting to discuss the future of aid. The Sudanese official expressed his gratitude that many Arab, Asian, and European countries are “more than willing” to invest in projects in Sudan. Speaking about his recent visit to Moscow, Sissy praised Sudanese relations with Russia, thanking the Russian government for the “efforts made to support and help the Sudanese people.”
