The Sudanese opposition alliance, the National Consensus Forces [NCF], issued a declaration renewing calls to topple President Omar al-Bashir’s regime on Tuesday. The opposition group expressed its intention to overthrow the President, replacing him with a democratic system through non-violent means. The NCF document, entitled the Omdurman Political Declaration, also claimed: “Our country is today marching briskly towards the abyss, driven by the policies of corruption, autocracy, social and geographical injustice, economic deterioration and the regime’s determination to impose political and cultural monolithism on a diverse society.” The NCF is a coalition of 17 opposition parties which includes the National Umma Party led by al-Sadik al-Mahdi and the People’s Congress Party led by Islamist Hasan al-Turabi. The alliance, which was founded in September 2009, is headed by another independent politician Farouk Abu Issa, former President of the Arab Bar.
