Egyptian security forces thwarted a Syrian man’s attempt to attack Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Cairo yesterday, after he threw a shoe at the Iranian leader following Maghrib prayers at the city’s Shiite el-Hussein mosque. Hundreds of Egyptians surrounded Ahmadinejad following the ceremony, when a young man from Syria attempted to attack the President, allegedly due to his country’s support for the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria. The man accused Ahmadinejad of killing Syrian civilians, following the Iranian regime’s tacit support for Assad. President Ahmadinejad is the first Iranian leader to visit Egypt since the country's 1979 revolution.
