Nouakchott – Mohammad Sharif Abeidy

An association for unemployed Mauritanian graduates said in a statement in Nouakchott on Friday that they opposed being drawn into the conflict between Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and his opponents, saying that their only aim was to defend the rights of unemployed graduates. The former students held a sit-in in front of the presidential palace where they ate their Iftar (fast-breaking meal had by Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan). They demanded  their requests for employment and equal opportunities be considered, adding that the protest was held after inaction by the concerned authorities had gone on for too long. “Based on our cultural and ethical references, we strongly condemn and reject the exploitation of our responsible efforts and work for conflicts , disputes and revenge to abuse some figures in authority . All of these acts are not related to our legitimate cause. Our association will struggle only to serve the interests of the unemployed graduates and their right in employment and equal opportunities of jobs. We will not distort our honorable history through which our brave strugglers have exerted their utmost to claim their rights. We appeal the new youth members not to allow anyone to take advantage of their enthusiasm in order to involve them in nonsensical conflicts. Unfortunately, some have been dragged into the recent demonstrations, however, our association is known for its peaceful, civilised and respectful protests and negotiating when required," said a statement.
