2 suspects detained over Mansoura protest killings

Prosecutors in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura have ordered the detention of two suspects accused of participating in a deadly attack on a pro-Morsi rally in the city on Friday. A rally held by supporters of Egypt\'s ousted president Mohamed Morsi was attacked on Friday, leaving three women dead and 34 people injured. Ahram\'s Arabic website reported that two suspects questioned so far denied the charges and said they were \"protecting their area\" along with other residents, and had not carried weapons during the clashes. The Mansoura deaths caused a wave of condemnations by the former president\'s supporters and opponents, many of whom called for immediate investigations. The Muslim Brotherhood, the group Morsi hails from, accused the now-defunct National Democratic Party of ousted president Hosni Mubarak of deploying “thugs” to carry out the attack with the assistance of the police. Morsi’s supporters have held daily protests since his ouster on 3 July.
