At least five people were injured Wednesday in a motorway accident in the western Japanese prefecture of Shiga, local officials said. The accident happened at around 11 a.m. local time when a heavy truck collided with a passenger car on the Meishin Expressway in Higashiomi city of the prefecture, according to Hikone City Fire Department. The fire department said that three men and two women, who were traveling in the car, were sent to hospitals, adding that three of those injured are in serious condition. Local police temporarily closed the west bound lanes on the motorway between Hikone Interchange and Yokaichi Interchange in the prefecture while investigating the cause of the accident.
