5 story Mumbai building collapses, dozens feared trapped

A five-story building that had been declared dilapidated collapsed in Mumbai Friday, trapping scores of people under the rubble, Indian authorities said. At least one person had died and more than 100 were feared to be under the debris of the building near a market on Dockyard Road in the country\'s financial capital, NDTV channel reported. NDTV said at least eight people had been rescued and four were admitted to a government hospital. Many ambulances and dozens of firefighters were at the scene. India Today Online reported the building, which had housed civic employees, was at least five decades old. The report said most of the residents were asleep when it came down. A few years ago, the building had been declared dilapidated and inspectors recommended moving residents to another location while urgent repair work could be carried out, the report said. Seventy four people died in the collapse of a suburban Mumbai building in April, The New York Times reported. A residential building fell in June, killing six.
