Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil Al-Araby reaffirmed the significance of setting up a transitional ruling body with full executive powers in Syria. Addressing the Geneva II Conference on Syria, Al-Araby said it is necessary to create a single international practical position aiming to put an end to growing violence and human rights violations and to bring those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity to trial. He also reiterated that the political option is the only way out of the current Syrian crisis in spite of relevant obstacles and problems. Al-Araby called on the international community, primarily the UN Security Council, to help in a positive atmosphere for successful necessary steps towards a ceasefire and urgent humanitarian aid to the violence-affected areas in Syria. Furthermore, the chief of the Arab League called for an immediate agreement between the Syrian government and opposition factions on a transitional ruling authority with full executive powers, eventually leading up to a new Syria. He also elaborated on the great efforts exerted by the pan-Arab bloc since July 2011 to resolve the Syrian crisis.
