Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Al-Arabi has strongly denounced the ongoing acts of sectarian violence against Muslims in Myanmar, considering the killing and torture witnessed by the Rohingya Muslim minority in the province of Arakan and other areas as a serious violation of human rights and freedom of belief. In a statement today, the Arab League Chief called on the government of Myanmar to shoulder its responsibilities towards all citizens and protect Muslim minorities, in respect of the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as other conventions and international human rights laws. He also appealed to the UN, its Human Rights Council, and the concerned regional organizations to immediately intervene to put an end to these serious abuses . He reiterated the Arab League’s support for all efforts in this regard, especially efforts being exerted by the Organization of Islamic cooperation (OIC) to rescue of Muslims in Myanmar.
