Armed Forces announced on Monday that border guards have successfully foiled an illegal immigration attempt by 674 persons of various nationalities via the western and southern borders of the country.
A statement released Monday by the Armed Forces said the border guards continued their security campaigns on all strategic fronts in line with the army's efforts to fight terrorism.
Within the military zone of the Second Field Army, troops seized 11 vehicles laden with 40 kilograms of heroin, 4 kilograms of cannabis and marijuana as well as uncustomized goods.
Meanwhile, border guards of the Third Field Army captured eight vehicles carrying 5,422 marijuana packets, 2,500 cigarette packs, water and power generation machines and car spareparts that have been illegally smuggled to Sinai.
In the western military zone, border guards also seized 23 vehicles smuggling drug tablets, cigarette packs, satellite communication devices and electric equipment.
In the southern military zone, border guards seized four vehicles laden with cannabis, machine guns, six magazines, two hunting rifles as well as ammunition that were used in hunting in Red Sea reserves.
Two metal detectors and gold-bearing rocks were also seized as part of the army operations to control the borders.
Nine Sudanese nationals were also arrested while trying to infiltrate the southern borders and they were referred for specialized prosecution to be interrogated.
