Battle of the Camel killings to be reinvestigated in Cairo

A Cairo prosecution court headed by state prosecutor Amr Fawzi on Sunday ordered the re-investigation of the killing of protesters during the notorious ‘Battle of the Camel’ incident, when peaceful anti-regime demonstrations in Tahrir Square were attacked by horse and camel riders on 2 February 2011. According to press statements, the decision came in response to several complaints filed with the prosecution appealing the October verdict that acquitted all defendants. In October of this year, 25 men were acquitted of charges related to the events, including Mubarak\'s former minister of information and chairman of the Shura Council Safwat El-Sherif, former National Democratic Party (NDP) MP Mohamed Abul-Enein and former NDP parliament speaker Fathi Sorour. The former minister of manpower Aisha Abdel-Hadi was also in the dock. The events in Tahrir Square left 11 dead, after men on horses and camels believed to be affiliated with the now-defunct National Democratic Party attacked the week-long sit-in in Tahrir.
