Candidates begin campaigns in Madagascar presidential race

Thirty-three candidates, including two women, started their month-long campaigns Tuesday to compete for Madagascar\'s presidency. President of the independent National Election Commission (CENIT) Atallah Beatrice urged all candidates in a statement to respect law and order in the 30-day run-up to the Oct. 25 poll. \"We will show to the world during this campaigning period that the Malagasy people respect democracy,\" the CENIT president said. Under the country\'s election law, there will be a run-off between the two highest vote-getters on Dec. 20 if no candidate wins a majority in the first round of voting.
