China to fulfill duty as Security Council president in objective, impartial manner

China will fulfill its duty as the rotating president of the UN Security Council in November in an objective and impartial manner, so as to effectively maintain international peace and security, the country's UN envoy said Monday. Liu Jieyi made the statement at a press conference to brief reporters on the work program of the 15-nation UN body. "During the presidency of the Security Council, China of course will be guided by the principles of objectivity, impartiality, efficiency, pragmatism and transparency," Liu said. "We will maintain close contact and cooperation with council members and parties concerned to ensure that the work of the Security Council will be conducted smoothly," he added. He noted that Middle East and African issues feature very high on the agenda of the Security Council. China will "work constructively to address the regional issues ... and work with the Council to actively fulfill its duties entrusted to it by the Charter of the United Nations in maintaining peace and security," Liu said. The Security Council has 15 members: five permanent members -- China, Britain, France, Russia and the United States -- and 10 non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms. The council's presidency rotates among the members. Each president holds office for one calendar month. China previously assumed the presidency in June 2012.
