China on Tuesday called on North Korea to comply with UN resolutions, responding to a threat by the North's leader Kim Jong-un that his country would soon conduct a nuclear warhead test.
China's foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said Beijing urged the "relevant party to faithfully observe UN Security Council resolutions and be prudent with its words and deeds".
Lu also urged "all relevant parties" to stop taking actions that could further raise tensions on the Korean Peninsula, saying the situation is "very complex and sensitive".
The North Korean leader issued the threat as he supervised a successful simulation of atmospheric re-entry of a ballistic missile, according to the North's state media earlier in the day.
Many outside analysts expressed doubts over North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile technologies, but Kim said last week that his country has successfully miniaturized nuclear warheads to put on a ballistic missile. North Korea has previously claimed its has miniaturized a nuclear warhead, but it was the first time that Kim directly made the claim.
China, North Korea's diplomatic and economic lifeline, backed new UN sanctions to punish the North for conducting its fourth nuclear test and rocket launch this year. Since the UN Security Council adopted new sanctions on North Korea, China has said it will earnestly implement the new punitive measures.
