US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton congratulated late on Monday Kyrgyzstan for holding its presidential elections, calling it an important step towards sustainable democracy. \"I congratulate the people of Kyrgyzstan for demonstrating their commitment to democracy and turning out in large numbers during Sunday\'s presidential election. This was an important step on the path toward sustainable democracy\", said Clinton in a statement. \"Candidates were allowed to compete in a competitive and robust campaign and both domestic and international observers were free to monitor the voting process on election day\", she added. Clinton noted that the OSCE Office of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) observation mission \"reported that the election process was open and respected fundamental freedoms, but shortcomings underscore the need to improve the electoral process. I urge the Central Election Commission to examine thoroughly and address any and all complaints of irregularities in a transparent manner\". \"I commend President Roza Otunbayeva, Parliament, and the many electoral officials who diligently sought to respect international standards for organizing a peaceful and orderly election. The United States will continue to support the people of Kyrgyzstan, and we will work with its elected officials and civil society to promote the transition to a democracy that is stable, prosperous, and ensures the human rights of all its citizens\", she concluded
