Cuba thwarted 43 attempts to smuggle illicit drugs into the country in 2013, slightly more than the previous year, the national television reported Tuesday. A majority of the seizures, 35 cases, took place at the Jose Marti International Airport of Havana, the main gateway to the Caribbean island nation. Official statistics showed that Cuba's customs service thwarted a total of 40 drug smuggling attempts in 2012, and that 628 people were punished for drug-related crimes. Cuba has signed anti-drug agreements with 33 countries and is in contact with police of 27 countries to exchange information on drug trafficking.
