Egypt doctors union: 84 killed outside Republican Guards HQ

Egyptian Medical Syndicate said Tuesday that 84, including two doctors, were killed outside the Republican Guards headquarters, where supporters of ousted president Mohammad Morsi were camping. Syndicate spokesman Ahmed Lotfi told a press conference that more than 1,000 were injured, including 7 doctors. The Egyptian Ambulance Authority had earlier put the death toll at 51 people. The Muslim Brotherhood accuses security forces of opening fire at its supporters while performing the morning prayer outside the Republican Guards compound. But the army and the police insist that protesters attacked the vicinity of the Republican Guards compound and troops standing guard, killing two police officers and one army officer. The Medical Syndicate Secretary General Jamal Abdel-Salam told reporters they have testimonies from many doctors at the scene regarding what really happened. \"These testimonies will be submitted to the investigating authorities.\" Interim President Adly Mansour has ordered the formation of a judicial committee to investigate the tragic events. Army says will defend Egypt public peace at all cost The Egyptian army has warned against any attempt to undermine \"the people\'s will\", vowing to defend public peace at all cost. \"The Armed Forces will preserve the public peace at any cost,\" Egyptian military chief and Defense Minister Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said in a statement read out on state TV. Egypt has been ravaged by rival demonstrations since the army removal of elected President Mohammad Morsi following mass protests against his regime. More than 51 people were killed Monday outside the Republican Guards headquarters, where pro-Morsi supporters were camping to protest his ouster. The Muslim Brotherhood accused the army of attacking its supporters while performing their morning prayers. But the army said that \"a terrorist group\" had attempted to storm the military compound and killed two police officers and an army officer. Al-Sisi warned that the army \"will not allow anyone to veer out of the road in a way that threatens security and peace.\" He noted that interim President Adly Mansour has issued a constitutional declaration to regulate the transitional phase. \"The declaration has definite timetables in a way that guarantees fulfilling the will of the people.\" Adly issued a 33-article constitutional declaration that stipulates amending the suspended constitution first, then holding parliamentary elections followed by presidential polls. It gives the interim president legislative authority after consulting the government until the new parliament is elected.
