Egyptian forces detained 16 African migrants trying to enter Israel illegally, Egyptian security sources said Wednesday. Egyptian officials said 16 people, including 10 women, were arrested trying to cross the border fence 10 kilometers north of Taba in south Sinai. The migrants were from the Ivory Coast, Sudan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia and told interrogators they were seeking political asylum and work in Israel, security sources said. They had paid $1,000 each to smugglers to assist them, officials added.
