Egyptian border police have destroyed a giant smuggling tunnel under the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, says the governor of northern Sinai.Abdul-Fattah Jarjour explained in a news conference Friday that the tunnel was used for smuggling big lorries. The tunnel, he added, was destroyed and security officers were deployed in the area to make sure it will not be open again.Jarjour added that the Egyptian ministry of interior decided to provide movable and permanent police patrols in Sinai with heavy weaponry including rocket propelled grenades.The move came after unidentified gunmen shot dead a security officer, Muhammad al-Haddad.
