Egypt\'s Morsi pledges support for Syrian refugees

Egypt President Mohamed Morsi vowed on Sunday to support Syrian refugees in every possible way until they are able to return home \"with dignity\" and stressed that among his priorities was that the embattled country remains unified. Morsi\'s statements, which were released on his official Twitter account, came a few hours before Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad made his first public appearance in months, calling for a \"full national mobilisation\" to fight against rebels he described as \"Al Qaeda terrorists.\" \"Our priorities in Syria: to stand against any military intervention that would add to the woes of the Syrian population, who are moving with full throttle and determination to get freedom,\" Morsi said. Turmoil in Syria erupted following last year\'s uprising against Al-Assad, which prompted battles across the countries between the president and rebels. So far, 60,000 people have been killed in the ensuing violence. \"Our priority in Syria is to fully maintain the unity of Syrian soil,\" Morsi added in another tweet. \"[We also seek]a political solution supported by Arab, regional and international consensus that shall open the way for the Syrian people to replace the system and elect an authority that represents them.\" In a speech at the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran last August, Morsi said that the Assad regime \"had lost all legitimacy\" and it was not enough to judy show sympathy but the time had come to act upon this sympathy for the Syrian people.
