European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on Sunday congratulated Mariano Rajoy for his victory in the Spanish general elections. \"I am fully confident on the capacity of the new government to overcoming the current economic situation by continuing the program of reforms needed for economic growth and creation of jobs,\" Van Rompuy said in a Twitter message. \"I look forward to working with the new president of the government in the near future,\"he said. With 90 percent of the votes counted, the Popular Party led by Rajoy won 186 seats, while the Socialists dropped from 169 to 110, their worst performance ever.
