Fijian PM undecided about contesting 2014 general elections

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has not determined whether he would contest the upcoming general elections, local media reported Sunday. Bainimarama said he has a lot to do at the moment and he will decide later on whether he will contest the 2014 general elections soon, adding that a lot of reforms still need to be completed before he makes a decision. "There has been a lot of requests thrown in my directions for me to stand in the next elections and to be part of a political party. But as I have also said I am preoccupied right now with the constituent assembly, with the constitution. And of course with the reforms, we don't have much time to complete the reforms that we had decided on," Bainimarama told news website Fijivillage. Bainimarama said he is worried that the proposed parties that have applied for registration were just aiming to get into power to change everything that had been implemented since December 2006, when he gained power by a coup. Meanwhile, about 300 applications have been received by the prime minister's office from individuals and organizations hoping to become members of the much awaited Constituent Assembly, which will debate and adopt the draft constitution prepared by the Constitution Commission.
