France, Britain push EU to reconsider Syria arms embargo

France and Britain agreed Friday to seek a common European Union position on whether to arm Syrian rebels, after suggesting they could do so unilaterally despite an EU embargo. After discussing the issue with their 27 EU counterparts in Brussels, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Hollande agreed to hand the issue to the bloc\'s foreign ministers, according to dpa. Hollande said opinions among EU member states had \'evolved\' in recent weeks. \'What I aim to do is to convince. At the moment many around the table are convinced, but not all,\' Hollande said. But an EU diplomat said the case was not as clear cut. EU President Herman Van Rompuy said the issue would top the agenda at informal talks between the foreign ministers in Dublin next week. Such meetings traditionally do not yield decisions. The current EU embargo is in place until the end of May.
