France to act on Central African Republic within days

France will launch a military operation in the Central African Republic (CAR) in the coming days with UN backing to stop the bloodshed and political vacuum that could destabilize the region, French Foreign Affairs Minister Laurent Fabius said on Thursday. In an interview with local press, Fabius expected a new UN resolution on CAR crisis to be unanimously adopted later in the day to pave the way for using force to restore security in the African country. "France is authorized to back (the resolution) to avoid the terrible humanitarian tragedies, to restore security and to ensure a democratic transition," he said. "The president (Francois Hollande) will take the decision to execute the resolution next days. As soon as the president will give the green light, things will go very fast," the minister added without giving an accurate date of the military operation. France has already sent 400 soldiers to the Central African Republic, pledging to boost its force to 1,200 in the country which has slipped into chaos since northern Seleka rebels seized the capital of Bangui and ousted President Francois Bozize in March.
