Fugitive returns to Taiwan to urge unification with China

Accused gang leader Chang An-lo, who fled to China in 1996, returned to Taiwan Saturday to face trial, saying he had come back to advocate unification with China. The 65-year-old known as the \"White Wolf,\" one of Taiwan\'s most wanted suspects, arrived at Taipei International Airport to turn himself in to authorities on the eve of the 16th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty. Despite being handcuffed, he held a leaflet advocating \"peaceful unification\" and \"one country, two systems,\" slogans the communist Chinese government has used to demand control over Taiwan, which it regards as a renegade province. A few hours later, Chang was released on bail of 1 million Taiwan dollars (33,000 US dollars).
