A German navy vessel captured a boat carrying three suspected people traffickers in the Mediterranean some 60 kilometres off the Libyan coast over the weekend, the German military reported.
The suspects had been accompanying a dinghy carrying 146 migrants, the statement said.
The trio was handed over to the Italian police in the Sicilian port of Catania late Sunday, according to German press agency (dpa).
The migrants were also picked up by the German vessel and taken to Italy.
The German navy has been participating in the migrant rescue effort in the Mediterranean since May 2015. Since June 30 it has been operating as part of the EU mission EUNAVFOR MED, which has been tasked with stopping traffickers.
