A detainee at the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba died in his cell last week, the military said Monday. Guards conducting routine checks on Saturday found the man unconscious and unresponsive in his cell, according to US Southern Command. They performed first aid, medical personnel were called and the detainee was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead, reported dpa. Authorities were withholding his name until his family could be notified, the military said. The man is the ninth terrorist suspect to die at Guantanamo since it opened in 2002. Six of the men committed suicide and the others died of natural causes. The latest death is being investigated and an autopsy was to be performed. The military said the body would be handled in accordance with Islamic tradition and would be returned to family members.
