A Hamas official demanded Wednesday that Egypt pressure Israel into abiding by the terms of a ceasefire, urging an end to border restrictions and the demolition of tunnels. Ismael al-Ashqar told Ma’an that Hamas supports the demolition of the tunnels in theory but they need an alternative. The tunnels supply multiple kinds of goods not otherwise available in Gaza. “Israel refuses to open border crossings with Gaza, which is part of the ceasefire agreement,” al-Ashqar said. “We want to demolish the tunnels, ourselves,” he added, “but Egypt should get involved.”
