High-ranking South African police officer found slain

The only items missing from the body of a top South African police officer found slain in a field were his cellphones, investigators said Wednesday. Major-General Tirhani Maswanganyi disappeared Monday while he was driving to Johannesburg, where he lived during the work week, Brigadier Neville Malila, a spokesman for the Gauteng police reported. A search began when his car was found parked along a roadside, and a police dog discovered the body Tuesday afternoon, The Star reported. The officer\'s hands and feet were bound, and his personal and work cell phones were missing, investigators said. But his money and other valuables were not stolen. Maswanganyi had been with the South African Police Service for 31 years and was a senior officer in Gauteng, the province that includes South Africa\'s largest city, Johannesburg, and its capital, Pretoria. A source told the Star that Maswanganyi was tough on police corruption and was responsible for a number of arrests in Johannesburg. \"You couldn\'t find a cleaner cop. He was ruthless about corruption,\" the source said. Gauteng police have offered a reward of 100,000 rand (almost $10,000) for information leading to an arrest.
